Cucire il mondo (Stitching the World)
Type: Exhibition
Date: From 5 February to 5 March 2026
The Galata Museo del Mare presents Cucire il mondo (Stitching the World), a contemporary art exhibition by Luigi Dellatorre that invites visitors to reflect on the future of humanity and the planet through the symbolic language of art.
The project emerges from the uncertainties of the present and addresses urgent global issues such as migration, conflict, inequality, climate change, and collective responsibility.
The exhibition features approximately 20–30 works, mainly tapestries created on denim canvas, in which the artist transforms the act of stitching into a powerful metaphor for connection, human relationships, and the possibility of change.
A Simple Gesture, a Universal Meaning
At the heart of the exhibition lies the act of stitching: a humble, everyday gesture that becomes a symbolic action capable of reconnecting what has been separated.
The seams, intentionally created using zigzag stitches, reflect the complexity of our time and the challenges of repairing a fragmented world, turning thread into a tool for ethical and social reflection.
The works are not cartographic representations of the Earth, but poetic abstractions that invite viewers to consider the planet as a single, vast, interconnected fabric.
The maps take on shifting forms: at times evoking an original unity, at others suggesting an unstable drift, portraying a world in constant transformation.
Denim as the Skin of the World
A distinctive element of the project is the use of denim, a universal and highly symbolic material: originally developed as workwear, later becoming a symbol of freedom, and today worn across the globe.
Its blue colour recalls the sea, the sky, and the Earth seen from space, becoming a shared and fragile “skin of the world.”
The works also incorporate the eight colours from which all national flags are composed, highlighting the need to move beyond borders and divisions in the name of a greater common good and new forms of cooperation among peoples.
Cucire il mondo at the Galata Museo del Mare
In Cucire il mondo, Luigi Dellatorre’s artistic practice becomes part of the cultural programme of the Galata Museo del Mare, which explores the sea as a space of passage, connection, and memory.
The exhibition expands this narrative, encouraging reflection on global interconnections, migration, and the role of humanity in shaping a future grounded in cooperation and mutual respect.
