MARE INTERNO – Bodies, Memories and Geographies of Water

Type: Exhibition

Date: From March 14 to 25, 2026

From March 14 to 25, 2026, the Galata Museo del Mare, Genoa, presents MARE INTERNO – Bodies, Memories and Geographies of Water, a contemporary group exhibition inviting visitors to look at the sea from a new and radical perspective.
Not the horizon.
Not the postcard.
Not decorative blue.
But the sea as a state of being.

Curated by Gina Affinito, MARE INTERNO reflects on the sea we do not see — the one each of us carries within. An unstable, deep sea, impossible to empty. A sea that is not merely natural landscape, but emotional geography: a constant pressure beneath the skin, a memory that moves through the body.
In an age marked by contemporary contradictions, the sea becomes an archive of human actions — a mirror of collective fragilities and tensions. No longer just a natural element, it emerges as a powerful symbol of the relationship between human beings and the environment.

Key thematic strands of the exhibition
Through diverse artistic languages and practices, the exhibition explores:

  • The body as liquid matter — permeable, amphibious
  • The sea as individual and collective memory
  • The concept of threshold, border and crossing
  • The human–environment relationship in contemporary times
  • Water as a symbolic, biological and temporal element

The works on display seek visions, tensions and resonances. They do not narrate the sea — they traverse it inwardly.
