Genoa: the Port after the Middle Ages
The painting “View of Genoa in 1481” by Cristoforo Grassi, is the most famous among the works representing medieval Genoa: it is the city where Christopher Columbus spent his childhood. Many details testify to the industriousness of the inhabitants, who made it one of the richest and most powerful in Europe of the time. Among the works most essential were the works needed to keep the port and the piers efficient: the Magistrature of the Municipality in charge of them, used to commission even large paintings to immortalize them. Three of these are on display in this room.
