Weapons of the Republic
The armour preserved in the Armory Room was intended for the personal defense of the soldiers on the galleys of the Republic. They were required lightness – in order not to burden the man during the boarding – and sturdiness: they had to withstand the shot of arquebus, the stroke of a spear or the arrow of a crossbow. The equipment was reduced to a minimum: the pectoralis and the dorsal, bound on the shoulders by leather laces and held together by a large leather belt: in case of a fall at sea, the soldier could remove it quickly so as not to be dragged down by the excessive weight. To shelter the head, the morion or the borgognotta.
Complete the setup some bombs, the primordial pieces of naval artillery, more dangerous for those who handled them than for the enemy!
